BEST RATED YOGA MATS 2020 – A BUYING GUIDE

Especially if you want to begin with yoga, you will think of buying a mat and not knowing what would suit you best. There are so many products to choose from in a wide range of price, colour, material, size and so on and it can be quite overwhelming to make the right choice. In this article I try to give you some hints for what you have to look for and where you can get it so that your yoga mat will be just right for you and your daily practice.

How to choose a yoga mat

There are some important criteria to consider before choosing your best yoga mat:

1. Thickness

Thickness is for comfort – think of your knees pressing on the mat in various poses

2. Material

Material gives you the texture of the mat, stickiness, sponginess and also eco-friendliness

 3. Texture

Gives you a traction range, affects slipping and sliding

 4. Stickiness

A sticky yoga mat prevents you from sliding and helps to maintain your alignment

 5. Eco-Friendliness

As yogis we are well aware of the preciousness of our mother Earth and we do not want to have yoga mats ending in landfills for decades, so we might want to buy eco-friendly mats made of rubber, jute or cotton

 6. Price

Prices range from £ 16 to over £ 100 and you will want to invest your money in a careful and sensible way without compromising on quality

 7. Personal taste and size

This means your favourite colour, pattern, print or size

    Dear Sesterheim,
This is quite an informative guide on what to look for before buying a yoga mat. You have mentioned the 7 most important aspects to look at including thickness for comfort, texture for traction, stickiness to assist in alignment, eco-friendliness to ensure no pollution to the environment, the price and personal taste.

I’ve never tried or researched on yoga, popular as it has become, probably because I’m quite cautionary when it comes to matters bordering on spiritualism, faith, religion, or such matters. Could you kindly demystify yoga for me? What could a beginner do to grasp the whole concept of professional or advanced yogis before they take on the journey fully?

    • Angelika Sesterheim Post authorReply

Hello, I can understand that you do not want to get into spiritualism and religion or faith, so I will try to explain what in my mind yoga is doing: it should help people connect with the present moment (which indeed is very difficult, just watch yourself!) and with their body and mind in order to have a healthy and fulfilled life. Yoga postures will help the body and breathing and reflecting will help the mind.

Thank you for your article and suggestions about the best yoga mats. I think it can be related to any usage of the mats, right? As I am not practicing yoga at home, but I do exercise regularly at home, some 3 hours of the week I can say, the rest in the fitness center. And I can admit how important is the quality and material of the mat and in my eyes the most important factor =thickness. Recently I had to change mine because it was not thick enough and I was left after my stomach exercises with not nice bloody wounds. So I have to agree, you have to definitely pay close attention to the mat you are going to purchase, and according to my experiences, even if you have to pay more, your health should be your priority.

    • Angelika Sesterheim Post authorReply

It is very true that the thickness of the mat is important, especially to be kind to your joints and not get injured. I hope you find the right mat and enjoy your yoga sessions even more!

Talk about an article that takes all the hassle out of choosing and buying. This is especially true, when going into areas that one knows absolutely nothing about. I might get frowned at but that’s alright. I am about to re-embark on a sort of yogic journey. I was lucky enough to come across ‘Yogalates’ a fair few years ago. At the time it was a perfect fit for me.

As I’m now looking to begin again, I could do with a decent mat. Last time I didn’t have one, which meant that the only place I could practice at home, was the lounge. With a mat, the world (or kitchen) is my oyster.

I was hoping, at some point, to progress to just the pure form of ‘Yoga’ itself and if that meant joining a club, then I would need a mat. Not that I’m frugal but I don’t see the need for me to have an expensive one. Your recommendations were excellent and the ‘Clever Yoga Mat’ looks to be ideal, especially as it is eco-friendly and 100% recyclable. Also, let’s not forget that it’s under £50, which really does ‘sweeten’ the deal.

Thank you very much for sharing your experiences and I think it is a wise choice not to spend so much when you just want to restart!
